It’s no longer ski season so I decided to have knee surgery.

I didn’t need the surgery, I could have put it off for years (torn cartilage, volleyball game gone wrong last November, no pain).

But I didn’t. I had the surgery now because I didn’t want to be less than my best for too long.

Spring is a great time to initiate change. Nature is sprouting up anew and procreating all over the place, how about you? What change wants to happen, and have you been putting it off? What emotional withholds need acknowledgement? Are you still in that flat relationship? Are you in denial about your job? Are you clinging to that same lame story about who you are, even though it’s been 20 years now

I know you have a problem to solve. How do I know this? Because you’re breathing. It’s never a matter of if your stuck, my dear friend, it’s a matter of where you’re stuck. Picture you’re climbing a mountain but oops! Now look around and see- perhaps you’re not actually climbing it anymore. You’re camping in the same spot and haven’t moved in months. Or even, years.

Where in your life do you think: “If only…” or “Some day…” I’m here to remind you to stop it, now, and take action.

Resisting surgery because you know it’s going to suck, I get it. It’s common. But that resistance will keep you limping along at half speed for longer than necessary. Why not figure out where you’re stuck now and create some movement in your life, because you don’t want to be nursing that same problem for another year, then another. Sign up for that relationship workshop. Have a conversation you’ve been putting off. Call the shrink, lawyer, friend, or in my case, surgeon, and set in motion important and necessary change.

That way you can learn the lessons you’re trajected to learn anyway, but more quickly, with less overall pain.

Join me, won’t you, in taking charge of packing up your gear and moving on yet again. And if not now… well, you know the next question.

It has long been thought in sports, being in the Zone is the highest place from which to perform.

That is no longer true. There is a higher place. It’s time to realize this.

Let’s start with an important question: What IS the zone?

Simply: it’s a place where your ego, mind and body drop off and collective consciousness enters. You become your sport, the road, the snow, the river, the infinite. Athletes may call this the Zone, but every spiritual tradition, every drippy hippy, every consciousness teacher out there has their own name: The Tao, The Truth, Spiritual Intelligence, Enlightenment, Nirvana, Emptiness, The Now, Big Mind, and on and on.

When your human side becomes spacious enough where this “Being” side has space to enter, it is one of the most lovely experiences imaginable. Then, whatever you want to call it- that state, it’s gone. It’s not sustainable. Your ego (sense of self) will always find a way to sneak back in. Nor can you make being in the Zone a goal- the more you effort, the more slippery the fish.

At my camps and in my private work, I’ve found a way to take you there in an instant, without effort. Then, as with anything, with practice the Zone can become easier to access. Powerful work, sure, but I’ve been wondering: what next? I turn to The historical Buddha and other progressive teachers for the answer.

And here’s where I’ve landed: experience The Zone, sure, but be sure to go back and claim your ego (sense of self) too.

Picture the basketball player playing his 48 minutes: He’s not in the Zone the whole time. He’s moving from state to state: experiencing the zone, next an emotion like fear, or anger, then failure, then glory- he changes states every moment. The greatest player doesn’t resist a thing. He stays in flow while all these states freely move through him, drive him, motivate him. For the whole game he’s dancing with his life. That’s what really happens out there. That’s the magic.

When we include it all: not just the Zone but also your emotional, mental and physical intelligence, your unique childhood wounds that unconsciously drive you like fear of failure or need for attention, your sexuality, ceaseless desire, dissatisfaction, then imagine even a single drop of masculine arrogance. Yum.

Makes sense doesn’t it? Being in the Zone, enhanced with the personal. we go to an even higher place that includes the Zone, but transcends it. This place has been called different things by different teachers: Unique Self, The Human Being, The Conscious Apex, the Buddha called it The Middle Way. I often refer to it as: Ordinary Mind IS the Zone.

And the best news is: make it your goal to be wherever you are, and it’s actually sustainable. Bonus: from this place the Zone can always enter seamlessly, without effort.

Do it. Embrace it all. Now see what happens to your performance.

Human kind does this? I shudder to imagine what’s possible.

The difference between a great athlete and someone who struggles, I’ve decided, is remarkably simple:

A great athlete focuses on what they are feeling.

Everyone else focuses on what they don’t want to feel.

Need an example?

When self doubt, fear and dissatisfaction shows up in a great athlete, he embodies these states and like an artist, uses them for motivation and self expression. Does he know he’s doing this? Nope- usually not. But that’s what he’s doing.

For others, when self doubt, fear and dissatisfaction shows up, they hate these feelings and see them as a form of personal weakness or failure. They try to get rid of the feelings by ignoring or fighting them. They say things like I need to ‘let go of’ this. They try breathing exercises, positive affirmations or whatever it takes to “conquer” these states. And it seems to work! For a little bit… but over time these feelings keep returning again and again until burn out or injury or some other stopping event occurs.

Which one are you?

I was interviewed this morning by a company hired to explore the connection between Red Bull athletes (I was a Red Bull athlete) and Navy Seals (I used to date a Navy Seal, sadly he was killed this fall in Libya).

Here are the questions. What I teach in my Ski camps at Alta, Utah are reflected in my answers.

What gets you fastest into flow states?
You just need to get out of your own way and open up space for them to enter. Transcend the mind, go into the body, then even transcend the body.

Two schools of thought on this:
1. happens in an instant- this is what I mostly teach
2. happens with a lot of practice over time (get really good at the technique of your sport so you don’t have to think about it anymore and the mind/body feels comfortable to move aside)

I prefer the first because it’s more progressive. Imagine a beginner athlete who gets there their first day. They still are new at the sport/ suck at it but can progress super fast without a lot of effort.

What gets you most frequently into flow states?

No effort. The harder you try to be there the further away they are. Just shift and you’re there. The best athletes do this in a moment (usually with a ritual) and don’t realize that’s what they’re doing.

What gets you Deepest into the state?

non thinking, non seeking, non doing, no effort, non grasping

-If you care about improving, be sure to show up to the mountain as an athlete. If you approach skiing as if it’s a hobby, you will struggle to improve. If you see it as a sport, and yourself as … Continue reading →

-If you care about improving, be sure to show up to the mountain as an athlete. If you approach skiing as if it’s a hobby, you will struggle to improve. If you see it as a sport, and yourself as an athlete, you will get better fester and be like a cat out there.

-Good skiers use technical drills to improve. Great skiers use passion. Stop taking lessons immediately and go express your passion.

-Use your emotions, especially fear and anger, to propel your passion. In the creative arts, it’s understood that emotions are more important than technique. This understanding can also be used in sports- which is also an art form. For example: Fear of failure, or fear of not being special can drive a person to greatness. Anger expressed in a mature way (without blame) is a great emotion for an aggressive sport like skiing. It is the birthplace of fire and passion.

-Tap into mature arrogance as well. Arrogance is nothing more than false pride. It’s “I can do this” even though you’ve never done it before. Many people lack confidence because they refuse to have an experience with arrogance. Without arrogance first, having us try something new, we can never get to the confidence we can do it. Just be sure it’s not directed in an immature way at other people.

-Let each moment of your life flow through you as if you are a hose. Your hose gets kinked the second you don’t like what’s happening and try to repress it. Just keep moving forward and embrace it all: the good turns, the bad turns, fear, no fear, in control, out of control. Eat it up, for there’s wisdom in all of it. Be sure to watch for lessons in these states, like a cat watching a mouse hole.

-Are you hungry for feedback? This is an important question- if you’re not, mindset training will be ineffective.

-Mindset training is for warriors. You’ll have to step out of what’s familiar or what you feel you know for sure, in order to learn. No stepping out, no learning. Are you a warrior?

-Mindset coaching is not about exploring ‘what is wrong with me and why?’ That’s old thinking. The world is no longer considered flat, either. This is about consciousness practice, more “what am I feeling and what wants to happen next?”

-Mindset coaching is not about advice; like “get your head in the game.” There should be concrete steps to put it into practice. Don’t settle for anything less.

-Try it all: a mindset coach like me, a psychologist, a Zen master, Kung Fu, Aikido, tapping, meditation or more. Don’t limit yourself to trying just one before picking what works for you.

-Then work on your practice same as you work on technique or strength. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it.

-Make sure your practice goes beyond the thinking mind. Find a practice that includes the wisdom of the body. Unless it’s an embodied experience, it’s often useless.

-Then go further into spiritual consciousness if you want to go all the way. I am not referring in any way to religion. I’m talking about connecting to that part of you that transcends the self and the relative reality. Watch the Olympics and you’ll witness this state.

-Do all this… then being great at your sport (and your life) happens much, much quicker. You will be run less by your unconscious patterns. You’ll actually feel like you have control over your life, and you will create great, lasting habits you’re proud of.

SKI To LIVE is mindset training:
Here’s what people have to say about Ski to Live:

“This is the first time that I feel genuinely excited and eager about what the future has in store for me.” -Xavier

“It truly was transformative for me. It has changed my life.” -KB
